Boutros Boutros-Ghali Obituary
Boutros Boutros-Ghali was the sixth Secretary General of the UN. The only one who was not reappointed.
At first sight one may come to the conclusion that he was not as successful as his predecessors and successors in getting a second term in office. That would be in my opinion a rather superficial statement.
He served the organization with dignity and determination which will be remembered.
The years during his term in office were the most exciting and decisive in dismantling the Cold War global order which dominated the second half of the 20th century.
In parallel newly emerging partners in world affairs especially from Africa, Asia and Latin America positioned themselves as equal partners in the UN. Boutros Boutros-Ghali will always remain in my deepest memory as a distinguished diplomat of the highest format.
I bow before his remains with utmost respect.
May he rest in peace.
