Munich Security Conference
During the Munich Security Conference, Dr. Srgjan Kerim spoke at the Parliamentarian Breakfast hosted by members of the Bavarian Landtag, including Dr. Martin Huber. The former Chancellor of Austria, Dr. Wolfgang Schüssel gave introductory remarks alongside Dr. Kerim.
Dr. Kerim discussed the role of the United Nations when it comes to security threats and terrorism as well as the significance of peacebuilding and peacekeeping missions. He specified that going back to diplomacy is the best approach in the preservation of peace and security globally.
In his second part, Dr. Kerim elaborated on the current migrant crisis; focusing specifically on how the United Nations as well as the European Union should respond to the large influx of migrants seeking shelter.
He concluded that “the role of the United Nations in this migration crisis is one of fundamental value. The UN constantly brings attention to one serious aspect which is the protection of basic human rights of refugees. The United Nations serves as a unified platform of solidarity and a driver for progressive action especially through the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and through the International Organization for Migration (IOM).”
