STOP the Attacks on our Civilization

Message by Dr Kerim

Turkey has suffered many innocent casualties in the past period. It has endured tremendous violence, bombings, shootings and attacks. Like many other cities in the world it has been the victim of brutal terrorism that must come to an end.

The deadly explosion that echoed in Istanbul’s historic district Sultanahmet is a tragic attack on civilization. I condemn such atrocities and terror. Nevertheless, I not only condemn it but reiterate the need of immediate action against it. Instead of being weak and selective, we have to be resolute and determined when combating this vicious cycle of terrorism. I believe that by aiming directly at the root causes from which it stems, thoroughly and not marginally is an effective strategy for battling terrorist attacks.

The United Nations alongside the Counter Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force (CTITF) and other relevant partnering organizations, the media, the private sector, local governments, should remain the nexus for bringing human security at the forefront.

At the 2005 World Summit the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1624 (2005) “condemning all acts of terrorism irrespective of their motivation, as well as the incitement to such acts. It also called on Member States to prohibit by law terrorist acts and incitement to commit them and to deny safe haven to anyone guilty of such conduct.” Now more than ever it is urgent and relevant that we act upon such measures.

Istanbul is one of the cities I have spent my life in and it is very dear to my heart. It’s architectural and cultural beauty is overwhelming and attracts people from all around the world. As a city full of historic diversity it embraces all religions and ethnicities in the world. As such it will always remain in my heart.

My prayers go out to the families of the innocent victims that lost their lives.
